Junior Secondary Summer Workbook Series

At the end of March, the ELT department at Marshall Cavendish Education published our first series of summer workbooks for junior secondary school students. Yes, unfortunately the poor kids in Hong Kong not only study hard during the school term, but also have summer homework to complete during the holidays.

There are four levels of Summer English Champions, which each contain six core units and a special grammar section. All the units have themes relating to the government curriculum, and they include reading, grammar, writing, listening, speaking and vocabulary practice.

I was one of the two desk editors in charge of this project, and I did the first round of manuscript editing for all four levels. Additionally, I wrote all the reading passages and writing tasks for the first two levels of the series (P6-S1 and S1-S2), though sadly my name can't appear on the cover.

My other responsibilities included coordinating and then proof-listening to the audio recordings, and liaising with other departments to purchase photos or commission artwork.

Although this project was quite rushed and there were some changes to key features mid-way through, it turned out well in the end. Hopefully Hong Kong secondary school teachers and students will think so, too!
